THE construction industry, a major contributor to the economy, faces the challenge of upgrading its resources and demonstrating social responsibility, a trade official said.

Department of Trade and Industry Undersecretary Mely Cruz, in a message during the PhilConstruct Visayas 2012 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino last week, challenged the Philippine Constructors Association to work with the government for the reduction of mainstream problems, especially poverty.

While the Philippines has improved to 65th out of 144 countries in global economic competitiveness this year, Cruz said, there are still concerns the industry must address, like developing skills.

Department of Budget and Management Undersecretary Richard Moya, in his speech, also highlighted the importance of public-private collaboration as a good strategy for both the government and private sectors.

Deliver the ?right cost with the right quality,? he said. He mentioned the private sector as advocates of reform that, in partnership with good governance, would lead to quality infrastructure.

PhilConstruct Visayas 2012 opened on Sept. 6, 2012 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino. The three-day expo involved more than 150 exhibitors with their 1,000 new products on display in over 200 booths.

According to Philippine Constructors Association Inc. First Vice President Gerardo V. Pancho, PhilConstruct Visayas is a reliable platform for new contacts and real business initiatives for the building and construction industry.

PhilConstruct Visayas is an annual exhibition co-organized by the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry. For 2013, event chairman Bernard Vonn I. Sia announced it will be held from June 6-8. (JSL)
