The Artwork That Infuriated Big Coal

We?ve got a lot of dead trees in the Rockies. More than usual. As the region has warmed, bark beetle populations have exploded, and they?ve been killing off massive swaths of pine and spruce. It?s hard to miss the damage, and when British landscape artist Chris Drury visited the University of Wyoming campus in Laramie, he proposed to tell the forests? story in an outdoor sculpture.

?Carbon Sink: What Goes Around Comes Around? was installed on the U.W. campus in late 2011. Funded by an anonymous donor and by the state Cultural Trust Fund, it consisted of a 36-foot-wide circle of logs from beetle-killed trees, arranged in a whirlpool pattern around a pile of coal. Drury hoped the sculpture would be left in place until it disintegrated, and the director of the campus art museum said there were ?no plans to uninstall it.? It was, Drury said, intended to inspire a conversation.

In May 2012, however, just after most students left campus, Carbon Sink quietly disappeared.

When University of Wyoming graduate Joe Riis?inquired about the fate of Carbon Sink, a university vice-president told him that it had been removed due to water damage. But emails recently obtained by Irina Zhorov, an enterprising reporter at Wyoming Public Media,?tell a different story. After the university announced the installation of Carbon Sink, Marion Loomis, the president of the Wyoming Mining Association, wrote to a university official and asked: ?What kind of crap is this?? Both industry representatives and state legislators weighed in on the sculpture, some threatening the university?s funding in no uncertain terms.

In April, university president Tom Buchanan?wrote to the director of the art museum: ?Given the controversy that it has generated, it would be best for UW if the fire pit (I?ve forgotten the name of the work) could be considered part of the [removal of other campus artworks] during the summer of 2012.? It was, and today, no trace of it remains.

Buchanan and others have tried to walk back their statements, here and here. But since the installation of Carbon Sink, the Wyoming legislature has?passed legislation requiring that art on parts of the university campus must be approved by the state governor and the U.W. School of Energy Resources governing board.

Public art is notoriously controversial. But controversy, in a way, is its very purpose. As Drury suggested, memorials and murals and outdoor sculptures?even, say, creepy?32-foot-high electric-blue horses?are meant to start conversations, even if the conversation is sometimes about how awful they are. A campus- or city-wide conversation without at least a little controversy is clearly leaving somebody out. In the case of Carbon Sink, the conversation barely got started?and almost everyone was left out.

Thomas Hart Benton Mural by Thomas Hart Benton

Last week, the Casper Star-Tribune, Wyoming?s statewide paper, opined that ?The only way the University of Wyoming could have handled the removal of controversial public art piece ?Carbon Sink? any worse is if they would have used the coal and wood from the artwork as a pyre to roast the artist.? (The coal, by the way, was burned for heat.)

Could it have been handled any better?

Consider the case of Thomas Hart Benton?s Indiana murals, which have been displayed at Indiana University in Bloomington since 1940. The 22 panels tell the history of the state, from the Mound Builders to the early 1900s, and they include the bad and the good, for instance placing members of the Ku Klux Klan?which briefly dominated state politics in 1924?in the same panel as a reporter and a printer from the Indianapolis Times, which broke the Klan?s hold on the state (and won a Pulitzer Prize) through its dogged coverage of KKK corruption.

The Klan panel has long been controversial, discomfiting first white viewers and then, when it was displayed on the I.U. campus, drawing complaints from the Black Student Union. In 2002, the union asked that the panel be covered.

Fitness Professionals - "do no harm" - Hive Health Media

Historically when a doctor begins his or her career they take a solemn oath. Knpwn as the Hippocratic Oath, it originated from the Greeks of legend. No one knows for certain which Greek penned it, Hippocrates, Pythagoras or the students of them, but it isn?t the writer, its the words.

Through time, it has been changed, amended, interpreted differently and even replaced with the Declaration of Geneva (which has also seen its fair share of amendments).

This is not a history lesson? you know that?s not my style. This is about what the oath once stood for and why a couple of the things that I?ve encountered over the last couple of days have me all fired up right now.

The one line that existed means a lot to me. Even though it was made for doctors, I believe in it as a mantra for any fitness professional. FITNESS PROFESSIONAL, not paid number counter.

  • I will apply dietetic measures for the benefit of the sick according to my ability and judgment; I will keep them from harm and injustice.

What does that mean?? In its simplest form, I will make sure that nutrition is the cornerstone of healing and that I will NEVER hurt anyone with what I do. A line later in the oath also says that I will not go beyond my knowledge and refer to someone more qualified if I don?t know (paraphrasing).

Today I talked to a firefighter that has been off work for a while because of a severe shoulder injury that he received while working out in one of those insane warehouse deals with a bunch of steel stuff, heavy ropes and people screaming to ?Fight the pain.?

He was doing what he was told by a person who he believed was a fitness professional. WRONG. The person was a professional number counter and screamer. The person had no clue about body mechanics, movement or form and therefore didn?t recognize the damage that was occurring and just yelled, ?Fight the pain.?

Last night, I read a piece of advice, that I don?t necessarily disagree with about a simple nutrition tip. I agreed with it in principle, but when I asked the writer why, he couldn?t support his own advice. Right advice, but NO IDEA why he was giving it. That indicates to me, he read it somewhere and thought, ?Hey, this will make me look smart.?

Come on people! Would you have your accounting done by a 6th grade math student? Sure its just addition and subtraction, but there is way more behind the scenes information to get you what you really need.

Fitness professionals dedicate their lives to your benefit. Fitness professionals put your health a their priority. Most of us know what we are talking about and will customize plans right for you and not just throw out a blanket statement, ?You should never eat X because it will make you have gas.?

Come on? seriously?

Fitness professionals study fitness, health, body mechanics and movement well beyond formal schooling. They consider it a mandatory course of action to help protect you.

Professional number counters take a weekend to get a piece of paper that says, ?I?m a certified personal trainer.? Sorry, no you aren?t. You are a number counter that has an obligation to your employer to try and get people to pay out money and never show up.

Please, be careful. Make sure you are with a qualified professional. Don?t just do fad workouts because they look cool. Not all works outs, not all diets and not all bodies respond to the same things in the same way.

To my fellow fitness professionals, thank you for knowing your craft and keep up the great work. To the number counters. Please know your limitations and help people.

Best of Luck,

Carrie

Baseball-Tigers' closer Valverde getting hammered in playoffs

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct 25 (Reuters) - The Detroit Tigers, taking on the San Francisco Giants in pursuit of their first World Series crown since 1984, may have to achieve their mission without help from struggling closer Jose Valverde.

Valverde saved 35 games in the regular season but during the playoffs has imploded, getting hammered in the American League Division Series against Oakland, the league championship series against New York and in Wednesday's opener of the World Series.

"It happens for a lot of players," Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta said before Thursday's night's Game Two of the Fall Classic at AT&T Park. "Right now, it's not a good moment for him.

"But we try to support him, we try to talk to him and let him know to forget about what happened yesterday or the day before and try to go for the next game."

In the Giants' 8-3 triumph in Wednesday's World Series opener, Valverde surrendered two runs on four straight hits before getting yanked by manager Jim Leyland, who called on him in the seventh inning.

The lone out Valverde managed was against the opposing pitcher, striking out Tim Lincecum on a 3-2 pitch.

"I certainly don't think he was bad last night," Leyland said. "He wasn't real good. The biggest thing with Valverde is the same thing that's bitten him all year where he's been too much in the middle of the plate."

Leyland said Valverde has the heat on his fastball, it's just that the location is off.

"People have all kind of answers as to what's been wrong," he said. "But from what I see, he was 92, 93 (mph) last night with a couple 94s, so I think it's just a matter of locating his fastball and keeping it out of the middle of the plate."

Prior to Wednesday's game, the 34-year-old Dominican had not pitched since the opening game of the ALCS when the Yankees tagged him for a pair of two-run homers in the ninth inning of a game they led 4-0.

Detroit survived Valverde's ninth-inning disaster with two runs in the 12th in a 6-4 triumph.

In his previous playoff appearance, Valverde came on in the ninth-inning of an AL Division Series-clinching situation with a two-run lead and six batters later Oakland claimed a 4-3 win.

Left-handed reliever Phil Coke closed the most recent Detroit wins, but Leyland may be forced to use a closer by committee approach.

Ten-year veteran Valverde has 277 career saves but during the 2012 playoffs is 0-1 with a 30.38 earned run average.

Leyland had wanted Valverde to get his confidence back in Wednesday's game even though it was not a save opportunity. The Tigers were already down 6-1 when Valverde took the hill.

"I thought it was a good opportunity to get him back out there, get him back on the mound, get a little bit of a feel for it," he said. (Editing by Larry Fine)

Obama says Romney always wrong on foreign affairs as rivals clash in final presidential debate

BOCA RATON, Fla. - President Barack Obama sharply challenged Mitt Romney on foreign policy as the two presidential rivals squared off in their third and final debate with the race in a dead heat two weeks before Election Day.

Obama used Monday night's debate to criticize Romney's support for beginning the war in Iraq, for opposing his plans to withdraw troops from Iraq, for inconsistent stances on Afghanistan and for opposing nuclear treaties with Russia.

"Every time you've offered an opinion, you've been wrong," Obama said.

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, responded that "attacking me is not an agenda" for dealing with a dangerous world. He accused Obama of sending the wrong signals to Iran's leaders by showing weakness in the Middle East.

"We're four years closer to a nuclear Iran," he said. Still, Romney stressed that war is a last option to prevent Tehran from developing a nuclear weapon, softening the hawkish tone that had been a hallmark of his campaign.

If and how the debate would affect the Nov. 6 presidential election was not clear. Foreign policy, the theme of the debate at Lynn University, in Boca Raton, Florida, has not been a major issue in a race centred on the U.S. economy. But both candidates were determined to appear to be strong leaders, rallying their supporters and winning over the remaining undecided voters.

There was none of the finger-pointing and little of the interrupting that marked their debate last week, when Obama needed a comeback after a listless performance in their first meeting on Oct. 3. Still, the two men frequently sniped at one another.

Romney, though, was more measured than Obama, agreeing with the president on a number of issues, perhaps seeking to appear more moderate to centrist voters who may determine the election's outcome. He barely mentioned what has become the hottest foreign policy issue in the campaign: the Obama's administration's handling of the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans.

Obama, from the opening moments, wasn't as subdued. He said Romney would reinstate the unpopular foreign policies of President George W. Bush. He accused him of frequently changing positions on how he would have handled Iraq and Afghanistan and jabbed at Romney's comments during the campaign that Russia is the United States' No. 1 geopolitical foe.

"Governor, when it comes to our foreign policy, you seem to want to import the foreign policies of the 1980s, just like the social policies of the 1950s and the economic policies of the 1920s," Obama said.

Romney said that despite early hopes, the ouster of despotic regimes in Egypt, Libya and elsewhere over the past year has resulted in a "rising tide of chaos." He said the president has failed to come up with a coherent policy to grapple with change sweeping the Middle East.

Romney described an Obama trip to the Middle East early in his presidency as an "apology tour" that bolstered U.S. adversaries while bypassing close ally Israel. Obama called that accusation the "biggest whopper" of the presidential campaign.

After Romney, criticizing the administration's defence budget, disapprovingly said the U.S. Navy has fewer ships than at any time since the end of World War I, Obama mockingly accused his rival of not understanding how the military works. "We also have fewer horses and bayonets because the nature of our military has changed," he said. "We have these things called aircraft carriers where planes land on them."

Foreign policy is generally seen as Obama's strength and he highlighted two of his campaign's main points: that he gave the order leading to the killing of terrorist leader Osama bin Laden and fulfilled a promise to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq. Romney, a multimillionaire businessman, has little foreign affairs experience.

Romney congratulated Obama "on taking out Osama bin Laden and taking on the leadership of al-Qaida." But he added, "we can't kill our way out of this mess. ... We must have a comprehensive and robust strategy."

With polls showing few voters likely to be swayed by foreign affairs, the candidates repeatedly turned the discussion back to the slowly recovering U.S. economy.

Both talked about being tough on China's trade practices they see as hurting U.S. businesses. That's a big issue in the industrial swing state of Ohio. The election is a state-by-state contest and the outcome in a small number of states that are not predictably Democratic or Republican, including Ohio, will determine the winner.

Romney repeated his threat to designate China a currency manipulator and punish it for intellectual property theft. He said China can be a partner, but "that does not mean they can just roll all over us and take our jobs."

Obama described China as both an adversary and a potential international partner. He defended his record in addressing China's trade violations, saying his administration had brought more cases than George W. Bush had in two terms.

There were several areas of agreement. Romney backed Obama's decision to remove support for Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. Both also said they oppose sending U.S. troops to Syria where opposition groups are fighting to topple President Bashar Assad's regime.

Romney said the 2010 surge of 33,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan was a success and asserted that efforts to train Afghan security forces are on track to enable the U.S. and its allies to put the Afghans fully in charge of security by the end of 2014. He said that U.S. forces should complete their withdrawal on that schedule; previously he has criticized the setting of a specific withdrawal date.

Both candidates underscored their support for Israel against a threat from Iran. "If Israel is attacked, we have their back," said Romney ? moments after Obama vowed, "I will stand with Israel if Israel is attacked."

The debate was moderated by veteran newsman Bob Schieffer of CBS News.

With the final debate behind them, both men are embarking on a two-week whirlwind of campaigning. The president is slated to speak in six states during a two-day trip that begins Wednesday. Romney intends to visit two or three states a day.

Already four million ballots have been cast in early voting in more than two dozen states.

Cambelt: How to Win Your Niche ~ Business Consulting Informations

"Content is king" proclaim the internet marketers, "You must write good
content to dominate your niche." Yep, that is what everyone is saying.
But I know that people in certain industries have complained that the
nature of their work makes it hard to come up with content that will be
valuable to readers. But there is always something you can do.

Case Study

Cambelt specializes in conveyor belts, mining equipment, frac equipment and a lot of other industrial type stuff. That might not sound very exciting. How much content can you write about this type of thing that will be interest. Well the people over there have found a couple of ways.

References

On the top level of navigation is a page titled technical reference. On the page are links to reference materials that Camblet has created like "Characteristics of Dry Bulk Solids" or "Common Mathematical Calculations." These are all things that people in their target market will find useful. This is wonderfully valuable stuff to write and it can be applied to just about every industry. If you are producing widgets then write about the things that you use everyday. Chances are someone in your target market will find it invaluable.

Links

Another thing that Cambelt does is link to related companies and resources. If you don't have the resources to do a comprehensive research project on frac sanders you can at least write about the study that someone else has done. The big goal here is to establish your company as an authority in your industry. The best way to do that is to associate yourself with the established authorities. If you link to them the might link to you but even if they don't you will still be appearing on the same web page.

Operation Guides

This type of content is brilliant. How many times have you lost a technical manual. Then when something goes wrong you spend just as much time searching for the manual as you do actually fixing the machine. By putting their operation guides on their website Cambelt has made it so much easier to use their products. Cutomers remember this type of thing and they will be more likely to return and buy again.
Writing good content is not as hard as it sounds. These are three solid tips that you can use. For more about Camblet head over to Cambelt.com and check them out.

The Impact Of SEO Web Design On Your Online Success

seo, search engine optimization???? Technoreporter.com ? SEO web design is a concept which emphasizes great architectural design principles based on how the search engines determine relevance and site information. The design should be able to give out the information that the user is seeking and at the same time be easily navigable. This is part of search engine optimization because the SEO web design should also be able to satisfy robotic crawlers and spiders in their quest for information regarding the website and other data.
SEO Web Design and Site Optimization:
Search engine optimization is more than just a trend nowadays. It is used and applied by almost all sites on the internet that aim to make money and reach online popularity. Among the many strategies of optimizing a web site, SEO web design is one of the topmost priorities.
The impact of the design of the site on search engine robotic crawlers or spiders can help raise the ranking of the site. This is where SEO web design comes in. There are many ways to make the web site more attractive to robotic visitors and human visitors alike. Actually, spiders and crawlers from search engines do not mind the overall aesthetic value of the site. All these robotic crawlers need is the information it can get from the site. The tricky part is how to put relevant information in the site in order for the crawlers to properly index the site due to its relevance. SEO companies who specialize in optimizing web sites must also know how to put a site in front of others in order to bring it to the attention of the Internet users. The search optimizers who will handle your site must be able to know the right strategies to place the web site ahead of others in its field through accepted methods of optimization.
SEO web design is a competitive area where web designers, or what I prefer to call website architects, work hard to come up with ideas and designs that are aesthetically appealing and relevant at the same time. There has to be consideration for ease of getting around the website, being appealing to a wide range of visitors and finding the right place for the website. Making a a basic, visually appealing site is easy with the many technologic advances available today, the problem with these advances are that they are sometimes quite tricky to use thus making your website difficult to navigate in. SEO web design should be easy to use and friendly to both human and robotic browsers.
Easy navigational access can be done by making the pages of the site easy to navigate to and having easy to understand and use button or labels to click on. The pictures and images on your SEO web design should be just the right size and scale to enable users to see them promptly after clicking instead of taking a very long time to download. Waiting for images and other graphics to load can be off putting for most visitors and will eventually lead them to another site which is more optimized and easy to view. Even spiders and crawlers will give up on a site which is not easy to navigate and get into.
The overall appeal of the SEO web design should not only be focused mainly on the niche that it is targeted on but also for Internet users who might have stumbled onto the site. SEO web design should have a universal appeal even for the most specialized type of sites on the Internet. Some webmasters or website owners could opt for specialized SEO web designs and these can also be done with the targeted audience in mind. It will also benefit the site if it is indexed as it should be. You might want to have a specific SEO web design which is built around the entire concept of your site and this can add to the ranking if you are quite specific with what you aim to sell or market. If you are marketing a specific product or information, SEO experts can focus on this product or information and build the SEO web design around it.
Another aspect of SEO web design that needs to be considered is what your competition is doing. The saying, ?know your enemy? is the key here. You do not want to have the same boring marketing strategies as the competition. Why? Because it is a good idea to keep abreast with what they are doing and how well they are doing in this field. There are many site optimization tools that can help analyze and determine what is needed for the site. Hence, in regard to SEO web design process, content is one of the prime needs and tools of making the site rank high during searches. Finding out or identifying the right keywords to integrate into the site can be crucial in making the site among the top ranking ones. Keyword search tools and having keyword rich content and titles can help to optimize a site efficiently.
Blue Net Studio SEO article submission, directories submission and seo packages includes all the functionality needed to put your business online in a professional way, attracting new customers and retaining their enthusiasm with reliable access and navigation.
SEO web design experts should also bear in mind that there are web strategies that may be unacceptable for search engines. Using these underhand or black hat tricks to perpetuate a site in rank can cause the search engines to ban the site and also the SEO web design company that did the search engine optimization work for it no matter how well the SEO web design is.

Microsoft announces Skype for Windows 8: full-screen calls, push notifications and People Hub integration

Microsoft announces Skype for Windows 8: full-screen calls, push notifications and People Hub integration

With Windows 8 going on sale in just four days, Microsoft is doing a sensible thing and releasing a version of Skype optimized for Win 8. As you'd expect, Skype for Windows 8 has the same overarching look and feel as other apps, which is to say you can swipe from left to right to see different categories, such as recent activity, favorites and a complete contacts list. But the integration with Windows 8 goes a little deeper than that. Just as you can pinch your Live Tiles to zoom out and make them easier to navigate, you can use semantic zoom to sift through a long list of contacts. And, because Skype runs in the background, you can set up your Start Screen so that the Skype Live Tile shows notifications for things like missed calls. Additionally, Skype is now baked into the People Hub, so that someone's Skype handle shows up alongside other forms of contact, like an email address or phone number.

The in-call experience has also been modified to take advantage of certain features in Win 8. For one, you can link your Skype and Microsoft account, so that when you log into your system using your Microsoft ID, you'll already be logged into Skype. While on a call, you can conduct video chats using the whole screen, at which point chat messages from that person will show up as text bubbles on the side of the screen. At any time, you can swipe to see other recent activity, which could be handy if you're juggling multiple IM conversations at once.

If you prefer, you can also dock Skype on the side of the screen, as you can with any other program in Win 8. With the Skype chat taking up just a third (or two thirds) of the screen, you can use that remaining real estate for an IM chat within Skype, or maybe a web search. Lastly, if you return to the home screen, there's a large phone icon up top where you'll find the dialer, whose number pad allow your fingers plenty of room to hit the right keys. You'll see your balance listed there, too, in the event you're not planning on making a free call to another Skype user. That's our quick summary of what's new, but if you like you'll soon be able to experience it yourself: the app will be available for free in the Windows Store on October 26th.

Booted Dung Beetles Reveal Clever Cooling [Video]

Anyone who?s been to the beach on a hot day knows the feeling of scorching sand underfoot. But do beetles that cross the sunny savanna or dwell in the desert feel it, too? Biologists have found that not only do dung beetles?which famously feed on feces rolled across the sand until it becomes a smooth sphere? feel the burn, their snack lets them beat the heat.

Dung beetles such as Scarabaeus (kheper) lamarcki typically select a pile of poo, often from a local herbivore, then roll it in a straight line to escape competitor beetles as quickly as possible. Along the way, the beetle occasionally clambers up, stretches out its head, rotates 360 degrees, and repeats?a maneuver referred to as the orientation dance (it?s hard to know you?re moving in a straight line when your head?s down and you?re pushing a ball). Biologists at Lund University in Sweden and the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa were studying this behavior in an effort to understand the insect?s visual navigational skills only to discover that the treasured dung ball serves as a sort of portable AC unit.

The scientists were observing S. lamarcki?s natural behavior when they noticed that around noon each day, beetles would climb up and begin preening?as you can see in the video below.

To test whether the heat might be affecting the beetle?s behavior, the scientists set up an experiment in which beetles rolled their dung balls at midday in either a well-shaded or sunny arena. They found that dung beetles in the hot arena climbed up on their ball more often, swiping at their faces and body.

Next, researchers decided to test whether the beetles climbed to get their feet off of the hot sands. In a bold scientific and sartorial experiment, they affixed dental silicone ?boots? on the beetles? front legs. When comparing boot-wearing to barefoot insects, the scientists found those in boots climbed up 35 percent less often and could push their dung ball for about twice as long without taking a break.

But what exactly does the dung ball do? For one, dung is moist, meaning as it rolls along it loses heat through evaporation. In other words, the same principle?evaporative cooling?that works in your AC, is at work here?albeit in a more portable format. Thermal video footage confirmed that the typical dung ball was distinctly cooler than either the beetle itself or the ground. In addition, the scientists found that beetles climbed up the dung ball significantly more often if the ball was heated (left in the sun for half an hour) as opposed to chilled (set in the freezer), which suggests the ball may also cool the sands as the beetle rolls it, giving the insect?s feet a little extra relief. The result, as the researchers call it, is a ?mobile thermal refuge.?

The findings are published today in the journal Current Biology. Whether more beetle boots are in the research group?s future remains unclear. Jochen Smolka, a biologist at Lund University and an author of the study, notes that putting on the boots was easier said than done: ?It?s actually hard to put them on their legs and hold out their forearms?they have very strong forearms.? For future studies, other beetle apparel is a distinct possibility?the scientists have also used dental silicone (which can be easily applied and peeled off without harming the insect) to fashion ?blinders? for vision tests. ?This group has a history of creating clothing for beetles?we?ve already created caps?it will be interesting to see what comes next,? Smolka says.

Defining A Growth Hacker: Building Growth Into Your Team ...

In this series titled ?Defining a growth hacker,? I will be exploring the meaning and practical application of growth hacking through a number of interviews with prominent growth hackers. This is the fourth post of the series. The previous posts are as follows: common characteristics here, growth hacking?s impact on marketing here, and impact on product here.

Paul Graham reminded the startup community that it is in the business of growth. ?A startup is a company designed to grow fast,? Graham writes.

Though growing a business is a universal desire, implementing growth is unique to the product, the market, and the company. Nabeel Hyatt, venture partner at Spark Capital, said that there is no single way to grow a company. Execution is a startup?s fingerprint: distinctive and hard to replicate.

A growth hacker?s role is not static but constantly adapting to the organization?s needs. Building growth into a team starts with adopting a culture of growth, recruiting the right team, and implementing with the right corporate mindset.

Adopting a culture of growth

Valuing ?growth? is more than just filling a position. It operates like a fundamental value or a ?creed? that the rest of the organization uses to prioritize decisions. ?Growth is not just the concept of ?how do I market this??. Rather, it is a company belief and value,? said Hiten Shah, co-founder of KISSmetrics.

From day one, company culture is being fastened and formed. Inserting growth creed at a later point in time requires more energy and time to implement, which slows down learning. ?At the founder level, a growth hacker designs product around inherent distribution and sets a data-driven culture,? said Matt Humphrey, co-founder of Homerun. ?This is probably the most important phase of a company.?

Adopting a growth creed at any point in time requires trust in the process and continuous internal advocacy. When it comes to growth, results require patience. The founder is the best person to integrate the creed into the organization, allocate resources and establish the organization?s vision on growth.

?Growth has to be part of the culture from day one,? said Jim Young, co-founder of HotorNot and Perceptual Networks. ?It is much harder to staple on a growth team when there is an entrenched development process that is not as metrics oriented or fast-paced. A growth hacker works best as a founder, since they will be able to establish the culture for growth from the very beginning.?

Recruiting the right team: a growth hacker

Implementing growth depends on the company?s maturity and resource accessibility. For an early stage company, a growth hacker is typically a strong generalist with a good product intuition due to the need to fill multiple roles.

?At first, a company needs to have a good product intuition with clever hooks,? said Mike Greenfield, co-founder of Circle of Moms and 500 Startups Growth Hacker-in-Residence. ?Later on, the quantitative part of growth starts to matter.?

With a small data set and highly variable user behavior, a growth hacker in the early stage is hustling every channel. Jesse Farmer, co-founder of Everlane, said that scalable growth in the early stage is a challenge: ?Early on it?s distribution ?ber alles and getting to the first few thousand users. Sometimes that?s hard to do through pure engineering due to the lack of scale. Growth hackers try to bootstrap through other avenues, such as press and inbound marketing.?

In this stage, having coding skills as a growth hacker pays off in a steeper learning curve and faster iterations. ?It is always better to be an engineer whether you are in product, a CEO, in marketing or in data. Engineering is a multiplier effect in speed,? Farmer said.

But this confluence of skills is rare. ?Earlier on, it is best to have those coding skillsets,? Shah said. ?But those people are unicorns. Most good growth people are great marketers and product people. Being a coder is not necessary to be a good growth hacker.?

Though a growth mindset should be adopted into the culture from day one and baked into the product, growth hacking is primarily a post product-market fit enterprise. Growth is an optimization problem. ?Most of the tools of trade don?t apply until after product-market fit and initial traction,? Hyatt said. ?Most great growth hacks are optimization problems.?

Recruiting the right team: growth teams

As a product surpasses early adopters, growth compounds in complexity and difficulty. ?The first stage of growth usually involves scrappy techniques to raise a round and prove the idea,? Humphrey said. ?The next phase gets more complicated with monetization and user accounting. This is when a startup sets itself out from the pack as a rocket-ship.?

Growing beyond early adopters presents a new set of growth challenges that requires specialization and more minds on the task of growth. A single, generalist growth hacker can be ineffective as a product gains mass adoption. Andy Johns, growth product manager at Quora, said, ?You need to build a team focused on growth, not just an individual,? said Johns.
A growth team is different from a growth hacker in that it?s the specialization of a growth hacker?s role. ?Different stages of company growth requires different types of growth teams,? Shah said. ?Growth hacking is not the same thing as a growth team. A growth hacker is a generalist who can attack several channels effectively. Growth teams are a group of specialized growth hackers.?

Though a growth team retains most of the mantra of a growth hacker, growing into a larger team naturally reduces agility and some of the hacker (?black hat?) nature. ?Comparing a growth teams to a growth hacker is like comparing marital arts to mixed martial arts. Both are fighters but on the ground, in a growth at all costs environment, you need a mixed martial artist,? Farmer said.

Implementation

Implementing growth touches every part of a company. Growth hackers and growth teams do not isolate themselves. Growth is a systematic endeavor. ?Growth is the confluence of hiring, organization building, analytics, data science, design, engineering, Internet marketing, and a trained mentality,? Johns said.

Growth hackers and growth teams work very closely in a product role across an organization to make an impact as quickly as possible. ?The role of the product manager and growth hacker is starting to collide,? Danielle Morrill, CEO of Referly said. ?Traditionally the product manager has been the gatekeeper of what gets built next, but the growth hacker looks at daily metrics and wants to move a lot faster.?

A creative yet systematic view of the product helps foresee how small changes can have a big impact. ?Growth hacking is about levers, not guessing,? Shah said. ?If you make one tweak, you should know or estimate the impact it will make in your product, directly and indirectly.?

Implementing growth is not always bright and sunny optimism because failure is essential element of growth. ?You don?t need to fall in love with your first idea. This is an objective science. You are either right or wrong,? Hyatt said. Growth is a learning process. Trust in the growth team is fundamental to success because not every concept works.

There are several misunderstandings around growth. The buzz on ?growth hacking? has intimated the misconception of simple overnight successes and a ?LEGO? conceptualization of conquering growth challenges. ?Growth is not sexy,? Johns said. Implementing growth is not easy. It requires continuous and proactive advocacy without realizing gains until a later date. Growth hackers are validated on a post-hoc basis.

However, when a growth hacker does get it right, they are right in a big way.

In my next post, I will discuss common myths and misconceptions about a growth hacker.

Aaron is currently a growth hacker in U.S. presidential politics and leads the growth committee for the Growth Hacker?s Conference. You can follow him on Twitter and his blog.
