Facebook Home updated with folders, widgets coming next
Facebook is busy pushing another round of updates out today for their standard app, as well as the somewhat useful Facebook Home launcher. The update for Home will bring the option for users to enjoy folders for their apps. Which can then be used in the app tray, or on the newly added dock so we can access apps and such like a smartphone should, instead of being merely a social networking device.
When Facebook Home first launched many were excited about it, but the lack of overall phone features we?re all used to was a big problem. They?ve since added the standard bottom dock for phone, messenger, or whatever apps you use the most. And now today have added folder support, something we?ve had on regular Android for a long time.
Simply drag an app on top of another and you?ll instantly be able to start a folder. This way users can group social apps, games, or whatever else into neat organized folders. Something that should make using Facebook Home even easier. Interestingly enough, while the changelog on the Play Store doesn?t mention it our Facebook rep mentioned the next feature they?re planning is widget support.
Sadly months after launch I still can?t try these feature on my Galaxy S4, as it isn?t officially supported, but if you?ve got a capable device give it a try from the download below. Then the regular Facebook app was also updated. We have sharing of stories into private messages, new swipe features to open chats, and for those still on Gingerbread they finally added the option to put Facebook on your SD card. That?s only about 2 years late.

Severe storms bring tornado warning, lightning, but no relief
Severe storms brought little relief to the first five-day heat wave in three years Sunday.
The National Weather Service issued a brief tornado warning in the area of Pelham, Mass., and severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for areas south and west of Worcester during the afternoon.
Another day of blistering temperatures prompted the National Weather Service to issue another heat advisory.

Heat indexes reached around 100 degrees.?While conditions were slightly less stressful than the past four days, temperatures reached into the 90s for the fifth day in a row.
Several lightning strikes were reported across the state including Northbridge and Palmer.
Kingston firefighters responded to a house fire on Round Hill Road for an initial report of a lightning strike, but they were still investigating the exact cause.
Marine warnings were also issued for the waters east of Plymouth.
Storm Team 5 meteorologist Mike Wankum said it is our second official heat wave of the summer of 2013.
?The pace of 90-plus days is very similar to the summer of 2010. That year we ended with a near record-setting 25 days above 90,? Wankum said.

Recreation & Sport: The Joy of Fly Fishing in New Brunswick
It was good to have the cloud cover as there was no wind at all. That only lasted a short while and then the sky was clear of clouds other than what you see when a plane flies overhead.
Once I saw the clouds disappearing it was time to pour on the sunscreen. I came home with only one tiny spot I missed that was burned. It's that little spot the gets burned when your shirt sleeves move up and down your arm.
It was one of those days when the wind was truly a welcome friend, even though it has a tendency to turn off those top water fish which are my favourite kind of fish. It also pushes off the spots we want to fish so we either have to use the anchor or the trolling motor.
The trolling motor is fun but this day it seemed to NOT be getting any power even though the power was there. So I was anchor detail for the rest of the day. But that was good as it was Casey that seemed to be doing most of the catching.
We stopped and walked down to the launch which is normally blocked with downed trees and debris that gets blown onto the short. It's usually so bad that you would never be able to launch anything more than a canoe, kayak or float tube.
We were so impressed with just how clean this spot was that we had to at least give this spot a try so Casey backed the boat down and in a few minutes we were fishing for pickerel.
There weren't many weeds here yet but we figured there would be pickerel here and headed out to give it a go.
Who Ever Cleaned This Spot Up Needs A Thank You
Sadly that wasn't to be.
It was a couple of hours before anything at all and then it was Casey with a fat chub. We then fished for another hour and it was again Casey but this time he landed a nice fat 21" pickerel.
That was it? Nothing else even looked at our bait.?
I'm not sure what it is about that location. Maybe later in the season when it's really thick with weeds we'll have to give it another try. But now it was time to get out of there and head to Chipman.
Wouldn't Want My Hand Caught In There
The fog that was over head making it look cloudy soon burned off and the few clouds that remained didn't stick around for long. Once the fog burned off the wind picked up but I didn't get upset with the wind because it was getting hotter by the minute and the breeze made it easier to handle.
This trip I was prepared with my new wide brimmed hat. It's not quite a sombrero but close and it kept the direct sun off my tender head.
The fishing was tough and the fish were acting very strange. Maybe the barometric pressure was squishing there head and messing with their vision because they sure were coming up short on the strikes. I think they needed glasses.
At the end of the day we both had 7 fish. The two biggest was Casey's 24" pickerel and my 23 1/2" pickerel.

Lebanon, technically at war with Israel, has warned in the past that it would "use all means" to defend its resource rights if Israel was found to be drilling within its borders.
Gebran Bassil told reporters at a media conference that Israel had discovered an underwater gas field in the Mediterranean sea only 4 km (2.5 miles) away from the border.
"This means, theoretically, that Israel is now able to reach Lebanese gas and that is a very grave situation," he said.
Barak Seri, the spokesman for Israel's Energy Ministry declined to comment.
Israel has made two of the world's largest offshore finds in the past decade, said to contain more than 800 billion cubic metres of gas. Texas-based Noble Energy is leading several international energy firms retrieving the new finds.
"We do not want to say a crisis would happen, but ... Israel would be able to dig horizontally. By doing that, it could reach the proven wells in Lebanon," Bassil said.

Snowden gets Venezuela, Nicaragua asylum offers
CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? The quest by NSA leaker Edward Snowden for a safe haven has taken a turn toward Latin America, with offers for asylum coming from the leftist presidents of Nicaragua and Venezuela.
But there were no immediate signs that efforts were underway to bring him to either nation after Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela and Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua made their offers during separate speeches in their home countries Friday.
The offers came one day after leftist South American leaders gathered to denounce the rerouting of Bolivian President Evo Morales' plane over Europe amid reports that the fugitive American was aboard.
Snowden, who is being sought by the United States, has asked for asylum in more than 20 countries, including Nicaragua and Venezuela. Many another nations have turned him down.
"As head of state, the government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela decided to offer humanitarian asylum to the young American Edward Snowden so that he can live in the homeland" of independence leader Simon Bolivar and the late President Hugo Chavez without "persecution from the empire," Maduro said, referring to the United States.
Maduro said several other Latin American governments have also expressed their intention of taking a similar stance by offering asylum for the cause of "dignity."
Chavez, who hand-picked Maduro as his successor, often engaged in similar defiance, criticizing U.S.-style capitalism and policies. In a 2006 speech to the U.N. General Assembly of world leaders, Chavez called President George W. Bush the devil, saying the podium reeked of sulfur after the U.S. president's address. He also accused Washington of plotting against him, expelled several diplomats and drug-enforcement agents and threatened to stop sending oil to the U.S.
Maduro made the asylum offer during a speech marking the anniversary of Venezuela's independence. It was not immediately clear if there were any conditions to Venezuela's offer.
But his critics said Maduro's decision is nothing but an attempt to veil the current undignified conditions of Venezuela, including one of the world's highest inflation rates and a shortage of basic products such as toilet paper.
"The asylum doesn't fix the economic disaster, the record inflation, an upcoming devaluation (of the currency), and the rising crime rate," Venezuelan opposition leader Henrique Capriles said in his Twitter account. Maduro beat Capriles in April's presidential election, but Capriles has not recognized defeat and has called it an electoral fraud.
Asked earlier this week about the possibility that any countries in the region would offer Snowden asylum, Geoff Thale, program director at the Washington Office on Latin America think tank, said that he thought Ortega would be careful not to damage his country's relationship with the U.S.
"Ortega has been tremendously successful at exploiting both the ALBA relationship and the U.S. relationship," Thale said, referring to the ALBA leftist trade bloc that provides Nicaragua with petroleum subsidies. Although Ortega is publicly seen as anti-American, "Nicaragua and the U.S. cooperate very closely on drug interdiction and the U.S. and Nicaraguan militaries work very closely, too," Thale said before the asylum offer was made.
Ortega said Friday he was willing to make the same asylum offer "if circumstances allow it," although he didn't say what those circumstances would be when he spoke during a speech in Managua.
He said the Nicaraguan embassy in Moscow received Snowden's application for asylum and that it is studying the request.
"We have the sovereign right to help a person who felt remorse after finding out how the United States was using technology to spy on the whole world, and especially its European allies," Ortega said.
The offers came one day after Maduro joined other leftist South American presidents Thursday in Cochabamba, Bolivia, to rally behind Morales and denounce the incident involving the plane.
Spain on Friday said it had been warned along with other European countries that Snowden, a former U.S. intelligence worker, was aboard the Bolivian presidential plane, an acknowledgement that the manhunt for the fugitive leaker had something to do with the plane's unexpected diversion to Austria.
It is unclear whether the United States warned Madrid about the Bolivian president's plane. U.S. officials will not detail their conversations with European countries, except to say that they have stated the U.S.'s general position that it wants Snowden back.
President Barack Obama has publicly displayed a relaxed attitude toward Snowden's movements, saying last month that he wouldn't be "scrambling jets to get a 29-year-old hacker."
But the drama surrounding the flight of Morales, whose plane was abruptly rerouted to Vienna after apparently being denied permission to fly over France, suggests that pressure is being applied behind the scenes.
Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo told Spanish National Television that "they told us that the information was clear, that he was inside."
He did not identify who "they" were and declined to say whether he had been in contact with the U.S. But he said that European countries' decisions were based on the tip. France has since sent a letter of apology to the Bolivian government.
Meanwhile, secret-spilling website WikiLeaks said that Snowden, who is still believed to be stuck in a Moscow airport's transit area, had put in asylum applications to six new countries.
WikiLeaks said in a message posted to Twitter on Friday that it wouldn't be identifying the countries involved "due to attempted U.S. interference."
Icelandic lawmakers introduced a proposal in Parliament on Thursday to grant immediate citizenship to Snowden, but the idea received minimal support.

ADHD and Bipolar Disorder are commonly diagnosed together. As bad as the word "comorbid" sounds, it simply means that two or more conditions co-exist. So if you have both disorders, how do you know which one is affecting you at a particular point in time when both disorders are characterized by similar symptoms such as inattention, hyperactivity, and disengagement?
Behavioral vs. Mood State
ADHD is more behavioral in nature, while Bipolar has more to do with your mood state. One way to tell is that ADHD tends to last all day while Bipolar symptoms cycle on and off. So, you might try to determine if your symptoms have been persistent all day or they are just coming into play at a certain time of the day.
Triggers
Both disorders can also be environmentally "triggered". However, ADHD triggers tend to be more frequent and minimal, like the person in meeting who keeps interrupting, so you disengage because you simply cannot bear to listen to him or her talk any longer. Since Bipolar Disorder has more to do with your mood state, symptoms are normally triggered by larger events, such as already having a stressful morning because you had a flat tire. Therefore, you are already in a mood state going into the meeting that predisposes you to disengagement and a lack of focus, no matter who is speaking or on what topic.
Sometimes both disorders may be at play at the same time. For example, you might be packing for a business trip that you are not looking forward to attending. Small distracting triggers like stopping to watch something on TV may keep you from packing. And at the same time, the stress of thinking about your business trip may put you in a mood state that slows your progress towards getting ready for the trip. And that has more to do with you Bipolar Disorder. It may seem easy to grasp on paper, but it can be very difficult to distinguish between BPII and ADHD when you are in the middle of a situation where you are feeling agitated, impatient, or just unable to focus, like the example of packing for the business trip.
Finding a Reputable Psychiatrist
Since the symptoms are so similar, and they can be difficult to determine on your own sometimes, it is imperative to find reputable psychiatrist who is skilled and experienced at diagnosing and treating both disorders. For starters, you might walk away with the wrong diagnosis. And treating them together is another complexity. A drug that helps control ADHD may worsen symptoms of Bipolar Disorder and vice versa. Having the right medications for both disorders is essential, so they can control the symptoms of both disorders and also work well together well.

'Dark Knight Returns' No. 2 cover to be auctioned
PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? It is the comic book cover that captured the grim visage of an older, wiser ? and meaner ? Batman.
Now, the 1986 pen and ink creation ? drawn by writer/artist Frank Miller ? that is the cover to "The Dark Knight Returns" No. 2 will be sold next month in Dallas by Heritage Auctions.
It's the first cover from DC Comics' 1986 four-issue "Dark Knight" miniseries to be sold and is expected to go for more than $500,000.
Miller's story "radically altered the direction of comics," said Todd Hignite, Heritage's vice president.
"For fans of modern comics, this drawing is where everything really begins," he said. "This moment defines Miller's Dark Knight, and the modern day perception of Batman, like no other drawing."
The only cover Hignite says might come close is the next in the series ? with Batman and Robin ? that was auctioned two years ago for nearly $450,000.
"It represents not only one of the most memorable images from the 1980s, but from Batman's entire illustrious history," said Hignite. "Miller's revolutionary Dark Knight radically altered the direction of comics with its prestige mini-series format, combined with the fact that it was one of the first modern mainstream features to put a gritty noir patina on the squeaky-clean Silver Age hero mythos previously exemplified by DC."
Also up for sale is a 9.2-graded copy of "Batman" No. 1 from 1940, that shows Batman and Robin swinging in front of a Gotham city skyline. It's being auctioned on behalf of Tadano America Corp. A similar copy sold for $850,000 in 2012.
"By any measure this is one of the most desirable comic books in existence," said Barry Sandoval, director of operations for comics and comic art category at Heritage. "There are just a few comics ahead of this on the ultimate comics list, but it's close when you see just how fantastic the shape of this book is."
The record price for a comic book remains "Action Comics" No. 1, which sold for $2.16 million in 2011. That featured Superman's first appearance.

AOC Q2963PM
If you have more than one monitor on your desktop and want to free up some valuable workplace real estate, consider replacing it with an ultra-wide monitor like the AOC Q2963PM . This 29-inch display has a resolution of 2,560-by-1,080, a 21:9 aspect ratio, and an IPS panel that offers rich color reproduction. It offers every video port you'll ever need and is reasonably priced, but it's not without a few minor flaws; it loses luminance when viewed from a top and bottom angle and it lacks ergonomic adjustability.
Design and Features
The Q2963PM's massive screen is housed in a matte black cabinet with uber-thin top and side bezels. The side bezels are curve around to the back of the cabinet and the 0.75-inch bottom bezel holds a small shiny AOC logo. There are four function buttons, a power switch, and a blue LED power light on the right side of the cabinet. None of the buttons are labeled but that's not a problem; pressing any key brings up an on-screen label that uses large icons to describe what each button does.
All of the I/O ports are mounted on the wedge-shaped stand, which has a removable base so you can hang the monitor on a wall using the VESA mounting holes. On the right side of the mounting arm are DVI, VGA, and DisplayPort inputs, while halfway down the arm, just above where it is connected to the base, there is an HDMI input, a DisplayPort output, an audio input, and a headphone jack. The DisplayPort output makes it possible to daisy chain multiple monitors using special DisplayPort Multi-stream cables (not included). The stand has a hinge that lets you tilt the panel forward and backward but there are no height, swivel, or pivot adjustments.
Picture settings include contrast, brightness, gamma, and Eco mode, which is AOC's name for picture mode and includes Standard, Text, Internet, Game, Movie, and Sports presets. Color settings include red, green, and blue level adjustments, Color Temperature, and Dynamic Color Boost (DCB), which offers green, blue, and skin tone enhancement settings.
The Q2963PM comes with a couple of neat utilities, including Screen+, a screen splitter that lets you split your desktop into different panels, with each panel displaying a different window. All you have to do is drag a window to the selected panel and drop it. Also included is the AOC e-Saver power management software, and i-Menu, which lets you change picture settings using a keyboard and mouse rather than the function buttons. Included in the box are VGA, DVI, and HDMI cables as well as a resource CD. The Q2963PM is covered by a three-year parts, labor, and backlight warranty.
Performance
The Q2963PM uses an IPS panel that delivers rich color quality and good grayscale performance. It was able to accurately reproduce all steps of the DisplayMate 64-Step Grayscale test and there was no evidence of tinting in the middle of the scale. Colors were mostly accurate; as shown in the color chart below, reds and blues were nearly perfect (the closer the dot is to its corresponding box the more accurate the color) but greens were a bit oversaturated, which is fairly common among affordable monitors given green's huge color space. Fortunately, the saturated greens did not result in greenish highlights or skewed colors.
Viewing angles performance was generally good, although there was a slight loss of luminance when viewed from the top and bottom angles. I noticed this with the Dell UltraSharp U2913WM also. The Q2963PM's 5-millisecond (black-to-white) pixel response handled fast motion video without any noticeable smearing or blur. In fact, this monitor is ideal for watching movies, whether in a separate window or in full screen mode. It offers crisp image detail and the embedded 3-watt speakers are nice and loud, although they could use a bass boost.
The Q2963PM used 33 watts of power during testing while operating in Standard mode. That's a few watts less than the 29-inch Dell U2913WM (36 watts) and significantly lower than the 30-inch Dell UltraSharp U3014 (60 watts).
If you require a dual monitor setup but don't have the room on your desktop, the AOC Q2963PM is a good bet. It offers good color and grayscale performance, loads of video inputs, and multiple monitor support. And, it's reasonably priced. That said, a USB hub would be a welcome addition, as would a height adjustable stand. Both the NEC MultiSync PA271W and Dell UltraSharp 3014 offer multiple USB ports and highly adjustable stand, but you'll pay significantly more for these features and don't get the full Ultra-wide, 21:9 screen.

Finnish startup Adaia set to launch $1,300 Android phone in 2014
Nokia's turmoils, and subsequent mass layoffs, have freed up plenty of smart people in the Finnish workforce to do their own thing. Rovio with Angry Birds, Jolla with Sailfish and now Adaia. The 16-person startup, led by former Nokia employee Heikki Sarajärvi, has revealed that it plans to launch a range of premium Android handsets at some point in 2014 in the US, UK and of course Finland. By premium, we're looking at anywhere between $1,300 to $6,500, in return for the promise of extra ruggedness and durability as well as potential satellite connectivity. Why Android? Heikki says "there is no alternative," something we assume Stephen Elop would strongly disagree with.
While there are no pictures to share today, local publication Digitoday got a chance to play with a prototype. They say the phone has a 4.8 inch screen and features the ability to hot-swap batteries without needing to turn the device off, though admittedly that hasn't been fully ironed out yet. One thing that might potentially turn some people off, aside from the exorbitant price, is the phone's weight -- final units are estimated to come in at between 240 and 250 grams, which is 60 grams heavier than even Nokia's tank-like Lumia 920. We've reached out to Adaia to request pictures and find out what all that bulk consists of.

Google posts Glass FAQ tackling policy and technology concerns
Google has nearly finished rolling out Glass to Explorer Program members, but many of us still have questions while the technology remains rare. The company is satisfying some of that curiosity today: it just posted a FAQ that explains Glass beyond the hardware. While there are no revelations in store, the page goes out of its way to address some of the controversies surrounding Glass, including app policies, privacy concerns and the risk of technology addiction. It's doubtful that the FAQ will please everyone, but those who just have to get some official answers on Glass can find them at the source link.

Gamblers like noisy slot machines -- it reinforces the rewarding feeling after a win
Winning sounds on slot machines make gambling more exciting, according to a new study by Mike Dixon and colleagues from the University of Waterloo in Canada. Moreover, their work shows that sounds also cause players to overestimate the number of times they won while playing on slot machines. The study is published online in Springer's Journal of Gambling Studies.
Sound has always been an integral part of the slot machine playing experience. Since the early 1900s, players have been rewarded with a ringing bell every time they have a winning combination. Today's slot machines average about 400 sound effects.
Modern slot machines allow players to wager on multiple lines. When they spin and lose, the machine goes quiet. When they spin and win more than their wager, they hear a celebratory song. Interestingly, when they spin and win back less than their wager (bet $1.00 and win back 20 cents) they still hear the celebratory songs despite the fact that overall they lost money on these spins. Dixon and colleagues sought to see if these celebratory sounds could hide the fact that players were losing money on these so-called 'losses disguised as wins.'
Dixon and team measured gamblers' physiological responses to various slot machine game outcomes wins, losses and losses disguised as wins with and without sound during play. During slot machine play, palms may sweat, which increases skin conductance - a measure of arousal.
A total of 96 gamblers played two sessions on a slot machine simulator. In one session, both wins and 'losses disguised as wins' were accompanied by rolling sounds and celebratory winning jingles, as well as visual feedback. In a second session, the sounds were turned off and players only received visual feedback. The researchers measured the participants' skin conductance and heart rate responses to the various outcomes. At the end of play, the gamblers were asked which session they preferred and why. They also estimated how many spins they had won back more than they wagered.
Sound influenced the overall levels of arousal of players. Skin conductance responses were significantly greater in the session with sound than in the session without sound. Players also rated the noisy session as more arousing than the quiet session. The majority of players preferred the playing session where wins were accompanied by sounds, which suggests that not only do sounds make playing more exciting, players enjoy this extra level of excitement.
Sounds also contributed to players overestimating their number of wins. While this overestimation occurred both in the quiet and noisy sessions, it was significantly higher in the session with sound 24 percent versus 15 percent in the session without sound. The authors suggest that sounds may be an integral part of 'the disguise' in losses disguised as wins, causing players to think that they have won more often during a playtime session than they actually have.
The authors conclude: "Although sounds may have contributed to players' enjoyment of the game, sound may also lead to an overestimation of winning. Both of these effects may contribute to gambling problems, such as misbeliefs about the true chances of winning, and persistence that some players experience when playing slot machines."

Executive Don Mattrick, who unveiled the Xbox One in May, is leaving Microsoft to head Zynga, the struggling online social gaming company best known for FarmVille.
Mark Pincus, Zynga?s founding chief executive, announced in an effusive memo to employees Monday that Mattrick, 49, would replace him. Pincus, 47, controls a 61 percent voting stake in the gaming company, so the decision to hire Mattrick would have been his.
"If you?re not familiar with Don, he?s an entertainment and game industry innovator who?s been making products and scaling teams and businesses for the last 30 years," Pincus wrote in a memo posted to AllThingsD. "Don?s had major leadership roles at Microsoft, Electronic Arts and Distinctive Software, which he founded when he was 17 years old."
Zynga's business model, which relied heavily on selling virtual goods to gamers on Facebook, began to disintegrate a year ago as users tired of Facebook games. Pincus has been unable to turn around the company named after his pet bulldog, Zinga.
The company's shares have hovered at just 25 percent of its $10 price at the company's initial offering price in December 2011. Zynga shares closed up around 10.4 percent at $3.07 on the Nasdaq.
Mattrick joined Microsoft in 2007 after spending years at Electronic Arts. He helped turn the Xbox business into a profitable venture after years of losses, eventually propelling it into the No.1 selling console in the United States.
Mattrick's departure comes just as Microsoft gears up to launch the Xbox One, the third version of its console. Scheduled to hit stores later this year, the machine has already stirred up controversy.
Gamers attacked the high price tag, Microsoft's plan to require an Internet connection at least once a day and moves to limit sharing of used games. Last month, Microsoft reversed its position on the Internet connection and said it would allow game sharing.
Mattrick is joining a game maker that publishes social media-based titles and low production-value smartphone games -- a departure from the world of big-budget, traditional packaged games embodied by the Xbox.
Mattrick had been rumored to depart for months. After EA's CEO stepped down in March, industry sources have speculated that he was in the running to lead the top games publisher, where he previously held numerous leadership roles.

Well, not necessarily. It turns out that big teeth don't always mean a big bite, especially if the animal lacks the strong jaws to wield them.
The hulking, toothy predators that roamed the earth millions of years ago have long been figures of lore for sinking their horrible teeth into the animals unlucky enough to keep company with them. One of the animals in the sabre-tooth lineage, a South American version called Thylacosmilus atrox, had two massive teeth, each with roots stretching back to its braincase and that protruded from its mouth like angry warnings to run away, fast. The catch is, this extinct animal, a species whose closest living relatives are the Australian and American marsupials, had a bite no more powerful than that of a modern domestic cat.
Scientists have found that the worryingly toothy animal actually lacked the sheer jaw power to leverage its own teeth. Instead, the ancient mammal had to rely on its brawn to snag its food, pinning its prey with its muscled arms before administering a precise, strategic bite that depended entirely on its neck muscle force.?
?Thylacosmilus looked and behaved like nothing alive today,? said University of New South Wales?palaeontologist Stephen Wroe, the leader of the research team. ?Frankly, the jaw muscles of?Thylacosmilus?were embarrassing."
To make those findings, published in PLOS ONE, scientists built three-dimensional computer models that played out how three feared animals chased and killed their prey: Thylacosmilus, its cousin, the classic North American sabre-toothed ?tiger? (Smilodon fatalis), and the modern leopard.
The models showed that that both of the extinct species had extremely weak jaws relative to the modern leopard, with those of the odd Thylacosmilus being the weakest. That means that Smilodon fatalis, a true member of the cat family, was similarly dependent on sheer brawn, rather than wickedly punishing jaws, to kill its food.
Lest it be too much of an embarrassment to legend, where Thylacosmilus did have an advantage was in its skull, which was uniquely adapted to absorb the stress of plunging its fangs into hapless animals.

Court wins draw big crowds to gay pride parades
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Gay rights supporters crowded parade routes in San Francisco, New York and other major U.S. cities Sunday to celebrate what once was unimaginable ? two Supreme Court victories on same-sex marriage.
The high court gave celebrants one more reason to cheer Sunday when Justice Anthony Kennedy rejected a last-ditch effort by opponents to stop gay marriages in California.
Among the thousands at San Francisco's event, now in its 43rd year, were scores of teenage girls, opposite-sex couples and families with children.
"You can feel the smiles," Graham Linn, 42, of Oakland said as he stood on a three-foot-tall building ledge surveying crowds 10-deep on the sidewalks. "All around you there is a release. There is a vindication, and you can feel it."
The biggest applause went up for the two newlywed couples whose legal challenge of Proposition 8 made it possible for Californians to wed.
The couples ? Kris Perry and Sandy Stier of Berkeley, and Paul Katami and Jeff Zarrillo of Burbank ? waved from convertibles as a group of people carried cartoon-style signs that read, "Prop. 8-Kapow!"
Human Rights Campaign President Chad Griffin, who orchestrated the lawsuit, and screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, who won an Academy Award for the movie about the slain gay rights leader Harvey Milk, marched with them.
"It's so historic," Jeff Margolis, 58, said. "So many of us could never imagine this would happen, that people would be able to do what they want for the rest of their lives."
Loud cheers went to House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and state Attorney General Kalama Harris ? straight politicians who have been vocal advocates of same-sex marriage.
San Francisco's parade lineup illustrated how mainstream support for same-sex marriage has become. Companies such as Facebook and supermarket chain Safeway were represented. Police officers and sheriff's deputies marched while holding hands.
There was also a group that called itself "Mormons for Marriage" that drew enthusiastic applause. The Mormon Church was one of the main sponsors of Proposition 8, the 2008 voter initiative that outlawed same-sex marriage in California.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday struck down Proposition 8 and also invalidated part of a 1996 federal law that denied spousal benefits to gay couples. On Sunday morning, Kennedy denied a last-ditch request from the sponsors of Proposition 8, who argued that a lower court on Friday prematurely allowed gay marriages to continue in the nation's most populous state.
The group that maintains marriage should be between a man and woman said the lower court should have waited until the Supreme Court ruling is finalized late in July.
"Everyone on all sides of the marriage debate should agree that the legal process must be followed," said attorney Austin R. Nimocks of Alliance Defending Freedom in a statement Sunday. "The more than 7 million Californians that voted to enact Proposition 8 deserve nothing short of the full respect and due process our judicial system provides."
San Francisco City Hall remained open on Sunday so couples who wanted to marry could obtain their licenses. Every other clerk in California's 58 counties will be required to issue same-sex marriage licenses starting Monday.
Parade organizers planned to hold a VIP reception for the newlyweds following the parade.
The parade in New York City, where the first pride march was held 44 years ago to mark the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Inn riots that kicked off the modern gay rights movement, also was a sort of victory lap for Edith Windsor, the 84-year-old widow who challenged the federal Defense of Marriage Act after she was forced to pay $363,053 on the estate of her late wife.
Windsor, who was picked as a grand marshal of New York's parade months before she won her case before the Supreme Court last week, walked up Fifth Avenue during the event and recalled watching it on television in past years with her wife, Thea Spyer, before Spyer died in 2009.
"I love it obviously," she said. "If someone had told me 50 years ago that I would be the marshal of New York City gay pride parade in 2013 at the age of 84, I never would have believed it."
In Seattle, the two women who were the first same-sex couple to be granted a marriage license in Washington state after same-sex marriage became legal there last year, Jane Abbot Lighty and Pete-e Petersen, helped raise a giant marriage equality sign featuring a red equal sign on top of the city's iconic Space Needle for the first time.
In another first, the Seattle Mariners flew a rainbow flag ? the symbol of gay pride first unfurled during San Francisco's parade in 1978 ? during their game Sunday against the Chicago Cubs.
The Supreme Court wins motivated many first-time pride parade spectators, including Michael Pence, 53, and John Moehnke, 46, of North Carolina. The couple, who are engaged and plan to marry in New York in the fall, attended Chicago's annual Pride Parade with a church group, saying they were thrilled about the court decisions and want to see gay marriage extended to Illinois and other states.
"We have such a long way to go but we're ready for the fight," Moehnke said.
Efforts to legalize gay marriage in Illinois have stalled. Advocates started the year with intense momentum and received backing from President Barack Obama and Illinois' top political leaders. The measure cleared the Illinois Senate on Valentine's Day, state Rep. Greg Harris, the bill's sponsor, decided not to call a vote in the House because he didn't have the needed support.
Harris was one of several politicians at the parade Sunday. He said he would bring back the issue in the fall, adding that the Supreme Court's rulings have resonated with his colleagues in the Illinois House.
"Illinois is in a truly second-class status until we pass marriage equality," Harris said.

Truth be told, OneNote is one of only a few Microsoft apps I've ever found myself using for any length of time, and this new version really isn't bad. Grab a copy from the App Store now, and be sure to let us know how you're finding it.
