Well-known archaeologist and businessman in Anguilla, Nik Douglas, died in New York on July 28, 2012. The following is an obituary prepared and submitted by his wife, Mrs. Christi Douglas, for publication in The Anguillian. A memorial event was held for him on Saturday afternoon, August 18, at the family?s Thai House at Shoal Bay, and was attended by a number of family members and friends.

Nik Douglas was born on 4 November 1944 inYorkshire,England. His father was a civil engineer and his mother was an artist, writer, and dance teacher. Nik was brought up in the Middle East until 1955, finishing his schooling at Bembridge School, an English independent school on theIsle of Wight.? From an early age he studied ancient cultures, archaeology and anthropology, specializing in Egyptology.

During the early1960?s Nik managed and produced the Moody Blues, along with other English rhythm and blues musicians and touring musical acts.? He also helped pioneer commercial radio in England through his involvement with Radio Caroline, the first ?pirate? commercial music station.

By early 1964 he had become interested in Tantra and Ayurvedic medicines. This led him to travel toIndia,Sri Lanka,Thailand,Tibet,Nepal, with Nik spending most of his time inAsiabetween 1966 and 1972. He studied Hindu and Buddhist philosophies and practices, researching Oriental medicine, art, sculpture and mysticism, studying with Hindu teachers, Buddhist lamas, Ayurvedic doctors and Tantric experts. During that period he had two children, Tara and Nyima, born inIndia. They lived in Kathmandu, a time associated with his Tibetan studies and his walk to the Dolpo region ofNepal.? He had an uncanny ability to recognise the quality and integrity of cultural artefacts, resulting in the beginnings of a vast and ever-growing collection of art and antiquities.

In 1968 Nik filmed at the Kumbha Mela festival inHardwarand at several other sites acrossIndiaresulting in his film, Tantra: Indian Rites of Ecstasy, (1969), co-produced with Mick Jagger and Robert Fraser. He also published the first issue of the magazine Chakra: A Journal of Tantra and Yoga at this time.

Nik returned to the West with his young children, firstly toCypruswhere he had grown up with his parents as a child, moving briefly toLondonand then settling inIbiza,Spain, where he developed inventions using solar energy, and worked on writing books and cataloguing his antiques collection.?? He moved back toLondonin the late 1970?s and then lived inNew Yorkfrom 1978 to 1981 where he produced a series of works including multiple books and his popular astrology cards.? His best-selling book with over a million copies sold, Sexual Secrets: The Alchemy of Ecstasy (1979) has been translated into over 30 languages.? In 1997, Simon & Schuster published Nik?s follow-up book Spiritual Sex: Secrets of Tantra From the Ice Age to the New Millennium (1997). Then, an entirely new colorized 20th Anniversary edition of Sexual Secrets was released in 2007, which introduces startling new evidence of Tantric and Taoist origins in archaic Indian tribal and Chinese Neolithic societies.

Nik?s move from the U.S. was to the Caribbean ? firstly to Cayman Islands, then Trinidad, Dominica, moving on to Tortola and finally settling in Anguilla in 1982.? In Anguilla he produced four albums for Reggae singer Bankie Banx, with three number one hits, and arranged for Bankie?s performance at the Reggae Sunsplash festival inJamaicain 1983, and other tours.? He personally boarded commuter planes and cargo boats around theCaribbeanislands in an effort to promote Bankie?s records on radio stations and generate album sales.

Nik came to Anguilla having heard Bankie Banx on the radio in Tortola, but he stayed due to his fascination with the rich Taino and Arawak history and archaeology ofAnguilla.? He was a key person behind revitalizing the Anguilla Archaeological and Historical Society, organising a number of archaeological digs and documenting the Fountain Cavern, an important ancient Arawak site. He brought archaeological experts and student groups toAnguillafor related projects, often at his own expense. He collected and documented over 50,000 pieces of Arawak materials, all donated to theAnguillaMuseumin The Valley, which he helped procure funding to build.? He helped found the Anguilla National Trust, was a founding member of the Anguilla Wrecks Committee, and devoted countless energy and hours to explore, develop, and promote Anguilla?s resources for the benefit ofAnguilla.? He also co-produced Mr. Ronald Webster?s published book, Scrapbook of Anguilla?s Revolution.

Simultaneously, he bought land near the Fountain inShoalBayand imported a group of antique houses fromThailandfrom which he constructed his family home, a source of fascination forAnguilla?s tourists, who often pass by for photographs.

In 1994, Nik met and married his wife Christi and they had three children. Nik and Christi travelled extensively while building up their business, The Galleria at World Art & Antiques, inAnguilla.? He also tirelessly and endlessly promotedAnguillaand its many benefits to individuals and real estate developers, resulting in multiple home and land investments, and projects such as Viceroy Anguilla.? In recent years Nik and Christi acquired and further developed The Botanical Gardens of Nevis, where they also operate other related businesses.

In his final years Nik expanded his lifelong interest in Asian and African art and antiques.? In 2010, he organised and curated a major exhibition at Tibet House inNew York.? Prior to his death, he was working on a major exhibition inLondon, entitled On the Silk Route; Birth of The Buddha, due to open in November 2012.? Also amongst his many projects prior to his death is a follow-up revision of his book Spiritual Sex, which will be available on Amazon.com in late September 2012.

Nik had an amazing memory, often working on multiple projects at a time.? He rejoiced in bringing together related art objects, building art collections which told a cultural story, and placing them in venues where they can be appreciated. He has been a consultant and agent for museums, galleries and private collections around the world.

Nik was a multicultural, multi-national, and multi-talented individual, an extraordinary visionary who could see beyond the mundane. He had the ability to think ?out of the box? and had several new ideas every day. Not religious in the ordinary sense, but deeply spiritual, he was steadfastly faithful to those who took the time to know him, and those whom he called friends. He was kind to everyone, and always made time to help anyone who needed his assistance, whether for his vast knowledge in areas of his specialty or connections all over the world, and in many other ways.? Nik?s passing has had an enormous impact in each corner of the world, as is evidenced by the many candlelight vigils held in churches, temples, and mosques across the world.? He was a global citizen who roamed the world in search of knowledge and he circumnavigated the globe several times a year, but it wasAnguillathat he always returned to, and chose to call his home.

Nik passed away in his sleep at his home inNew Yorkon July 28th, 2012, and is survived by his wife, five children, one grandchild and sister.

BERLIN (AP) ? Greece made little immediate progress in its quest for more time to carry out painful cuts during talks between its Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel Friday.
But the German leader did offer some support to the stricken country, stressing that Berlin wanted to keep Greece in the euro and that it won't rush to make any premature judgments about its reform efforts.
In German and French media this week, Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has been arguing that his country should have more time beyond the mid-2014 deadline to complete reforms that are a condition of it continuing to receive bailout loans. Without the help, Greece would be forced into a chaotic default on its debts and could be forced out of the eurozone.
Leading German politicians have voiced deep skepticism about granting Greece any concessions. Merkel and French President Francois Hollande, meeting a day before Samaras came to Berlin, put the onus squarely on Greece to fulfill its pledges.
Athens has faltered in the speed and effectiveness of implementing the reforms ? irritating creditors, notably Germany, which is the single largest contributor to its ?240 billion ($300 billion) bailout packages. Weeks of political wrangling in Greece that ultimately brought a coalition government under Samaras to power didn't help.
Greece's continued access to the bailout packages hinges on a favorable report next month from the so-called "troika" of the country's debt inspectors ? the European Union, European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund. If Greece is found to have failed on key economic reforms that are conditions of the bailout loan, vital funds could be halted.
"To win back confidence, we must fulfill expectations, and so I made clear in the talks that we of course expect from Greece that the commitments that were made be implemented, that deeds follow words," Merkel said after meeting Samaras.
"But fulfilling expectations also means that Greece can rightly expect from Germany that we do not pass premature judgments," Merkel said, adding that Germany needs to wait for the debt inspectors' report.
Merkel didn't address Samaras' hopes of winning more time to carry out reforms, which he reiterated at Friday's joint news conference, emphasizing that stimulating economic growth is a priority.
"We don't want more aid, we did not ask for more money; but we need time to breathe ? it is a big leap that Greece is making," he said. He didn't specify how long that "time to breathe" might be.
Germany's finance minister has argued that giving Greece more time wouldn't solve the country's problems, and the parliamentary caucus leader of Merkel's conservative bloc poured more cold water on the idea Friday. Both question Samaras' assertion that giving Greece more time doesn't have to mean giving it more money.
And Merkel would need approval for any extra funding in Parliament, where lawmakers in her center-right coalition have no appetite for another Greek rescue program.
Merkel said there are "two realities" that need to be reconciled by European leaders.
In Greece, she said, there is the perspective of having suffered through years of recession and being asked now for more painful cuts. "And then there's the other reality expressed by many in Germany that we have for more than two years guaranteed programs, support and a lot of money for Greece and it always comes to that point where what we have expected has not happened, and from that has grown a lot of impatience."
Some German politicians have talked openly about the possibility of Greece leaving the euro. The vice chancellor, Economy Minister Philipp Roesler, has said the idea of a Greek exit has "lost its horror."
However, Merkel repeated on Friday that Germany wants Greece to keep the shared currency.
"I want to say very clearly here ... (and) this is also the aim of the entire German government, that Greece is a part of the eurozone and I would like Greece to remain part of the eurozone," she said.
Friday's meeting "was a good beginning, but it also became clear in the talks that there is a lot to do," Merkel said.
Greece "will stay true to its commitments," Samaras insisted. "To be precise, we are already doing so. I am convinced that the report of the troika will signal that the new coalition government in Greece will soon lead to results."
Samaras will meet Hollande in Paris on Saturday. Continuing a round of financial diplomacy, Merkel will meet next Wednesday with Italian Premier Mario Monti, whose country is struggling with high borrowing costs.
Earlier Friday, the parliamentary leader of Merkel's conservative bloc said he was "very skeptical" about giving Greece more time. "My position is that neither the time nor the position in substance can be renegotiated; Greece must now fulfill its duties," Volker Kauder told ZDF television.
Asked whether the euro would fail if Greece leaves, Kauder replied that rescue funds are in place to help prevent contagion of other countries, so "I would say that this wouldn't be a problem for the euro."
Samaras said it time for an end to talk about Greece leaving the euro.
"Can there be any businessman who invests in this country if he knows that he will invest in euros and get drachma back? No," Samaras said.
"You can imagine that this cacophony ... creates such big problems that one has the impression of fighting for nothing."

Cycling has enjoyed a huge boost in popularity across the UK following Britain's success at elite level which this year saw Bradley Wiggins win the Tour de France and Team GB take an astonishing 12 medals at the London 2012 Olympics, eight of which were gold.
There is particular interest in Scotland after Sir Chris Hoy (pictured top, leading) won two gold medals at London 2012 to take his overall tally to six golds and a silver, making him Britain's greatest ever Olympian.
Sir Chris is likely to bow out of the sport at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in the velodrome that has been named after him and McAveety has been tasked with making the sport popular amongst normal Glaswegians in a similar way Mayor of London Boris Johnson has done with Londoners through initiatives such as his Boris Bike scheme.
McAveety will publish an updated strategy later this year to encourage commuting, racing and leisure cycling.
"We realise there are obstacles," said the 50-year-old councillor for Shettleston.
"Commuters face potholes and, often, a lack of consideration from motorists.
"Youngsters who want to take up competitive cycling might struggle to find proper coaching, but these are the things we want to address."
There has been 50 per cent growth in bike riding in Glasgow city centre during the past three years but cycling still only accounts for two per cent of commuter trips.
It is hoped that McAveety will be able to increase this although some will be surprised by his appointment as the former Sports Minister has often been a figure of controversy.
In 2004, he was forced to apologise for misleading Parliament when he turned up late for a question time claiming to have been unavoidably detained on ministerial business.
It was later discovered that he was actually eating pie, beans and roast potatoes in the Parliament canteen.
The incident was dubbed "pie-gate" and is said to have led then First Minister Jack McConnell to sack him from his Cabinet later that year.
Major controversy struck again in June 2010 when McAveety was forced to resign as Convenor of the Scottish Parliament's Public Petitions Committee after being overheard making comments about a female member of the audience during a break in committee proceedings because he had not switched off his microphone.
With his microphone still on, McAveety said: "There's a very attractive girl in the second row, dark and dusky.
"We'll maybe put a wee word out for her."

When first the speculation and subsequently the confirmation that in addition to suffering massive losses on its IG-9 position, JPM had engaged in massive, reckless and criminal CDS mismarking with the intent to defraud and to boost the appearance of profit for selfish reasons, we promptly concluded that "Jamie Dimon's "tempest in a teapot" just became a fully-formed, perfect storm which suddenly threatens his very position, and could potentially lead to billions more in losses for his firm." So far, the regulators which are currently on page two of "CDS for Absolutely Corrupt Criminal Morons", are only slowly catching up. And while the stench will eventually lead to Jamie, as what happened in the over the counter, unregulated CDS market has most certainly happened at the tens of trillions in other OTC products traded by JPM, most of which are IR swaps, tying it all back nicely to the Libor scandal of which JPM is also a part, the first person who will certainly experience some major pain as the JPM scapegoating plays out, is none other than the London Whale himself Bruno Iksil, who was loved by all at JPM when he was making money, and is now being hung out to dry, once the bank is in the prosecution's cross hairs.

Bruno Iksil, a French citizen and a former London-based trader in JPMorgan Chase & Co's Chief Investment office, is under scrutiny for trades he made in an illiquid market for credit products that resulted in the bank's losses. Iksil became known in the derivatives market as the "London Whale" for the size of the positions he took.

U.S. federal investigators are looking at whether Iksil, who was fired in July, and his superiors deliberately mismarked the value of some of the trading positions to try to cover up the losses. JPMorgan is also conducting an internal probe.

The sources, who did not want to be identified because they were not authorized to talk about the investigation, said Iksil has also hired criminal defence lawyers in New York and Washington, D.C.
Bruno is not alone:
At least six people have retained lawyers in connection with the investigation. Iksil's supervisors, Javier Martin-Artajo and Achilles Macris, who were also fired by the bank in the wake of the losses, have attorneys in London and New York.

In addition to the CIO traders, the former head of the CIO office, Ina Drew, and two former risk officers, Peter Weiland and Irvin Goldman, have also hired lawyers.
And for all those wondering why all recent major crimes have London as a tipping point: Lehman, AIG, MF Global, UBS, JPM, the answer is very simple: jurisdiction.
Credit Suisse discovered that traders managing a portfolio of mortgage-backed securities had been inflating their numbers to make their group's profits look bigger and to hide losses in 2007, as the subprime mortgage crisis deepened.

In February, federal prosecutors announced charges against three people from Credit Suisse, two of whom pleaded guilty to conspiring to falsify the bank's accounts.

The third, Kareem Serageldin, a U.S. citizen living in London, was indicted in federal court in New York but has yet to come to the United States to face the charges. In recorded conversations he leaned on more junior traders to overstate the value of their securities, the indictment alleged.

If the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which is reviewing emails, phone records and witness statements about the CIO losses, finds evidence of fraud and criminal charges are brought, prosecutors could face some of the same hurdles in the JPMorgan case as they did with Credit Suisse traders.

Iksil's French citizenship complicates potential efforts to bring him to the U.S. for a trial. Witnesses whose cooperation may be crucial to the case will also have to come to New York to testify in the event of a trial.
Of course, even if he were to come to the US, Iksil hardly has much to worry about: after all that other Frenchman, Goldman's Fabrice Tourre who was found to magically be solely responsible for the firm's CDO fiasco, is not only still free, but technically receiving a Goldman salary.
In the meantime, if there is even one reputable regulator or enforcer left in the this banana republic, here is the bottom line: ignore JPM's CDS, and focus on its LIBOR-derived Interest Rate swaps, which too trade Over The Counter, and which like CDS will never trade on an exchange for one simple reason: it allows JPM to mark them at whatever prices it desires. Furthermore, with the objective pricing arbiter of all OTC products, MarkIt, being owned by the same banks that (ab)use it every day, the logical conclusion is that the $400+ million mismarking in JPM's CDS is orders of magnitude lower compared to what JPM is undoubtedly engaging in in other product verticals, namely IR swaps, where the bank has total exposure of $71 TRILLION in the OTC derivative market.
If regulators indeed care about restoring confidence to the market, and choose to be be proactive for once, instead of always reactive, forget Bruno, forget JPM's CDS exposure, and bust the firm where it indeed hurts - it tens of trillions in mismarked Futures, Options, Forwards and Swaps.

TALLAHASSEE -- One of the few bright spots from Florida State?s ground game that finished 104th in the country in 2011 was Devonta Freeman.
Freeman, who turned heads after amassing more than 350 yards from scrimmage for Miami Central during a state title game, led the Seminoles in rushing as a freshman last season. He averaged 4.8 yards and rushed for 579 yards and eight touchdowns.
It looked easy, but the transition from high school to college was anything but smooth for Freeman.
?When I first came in as a freshman I was lost,? Freeman said. ?I didn?t know a whole lot; I didn?t know how to deal with the whole college thing, period. But as it went on I learned how to deal with time management, my studies, school and the playbook at the same time.?
Freeman points to the tutelage of senior tailback Chris Thompson, who mentored Freeman last season while recovering from a broken back, as a major factor in his progress.
The two have formed an exceptionally strong bond.
?Chris Thompson was always around,? Freeman said. ?Even though he didn?t play, he just always kind of mentored me. Any questions I asked, he was always there for me, even if I get chewed out by the coaches some, he would be like, ?Keep your head up and move on.??
As Freeman got his reps in, Thompson stood behind the line each day at practice taking mental reps and helping to keep Freeman?s spirits up.
?He was just teaching me to move on to the next play and stuff because sometimes I get chewed out by the coach or whatever and then I go into my shell,? Freeman said. ?But Chris Thompson was always there to talk to me and just be there for me.?
That support was vital during the offseason when Freeman was injured and held out of spring practice.
?When you come to a college and you get injured you feel like the coaches forgot about you,? Freeman said.
Thompson didn?t. Still rehabbing his own injury, the senior running back stood beside Freeman on the sideline each day, keeping him positive and offering the young back support in every way he could.
?The person that I talked to the most was Chris Thompson,? Freeman said. ?[We] have kind of been through the same thing off the field, too. And also on the field, but with his family problems and my family problems, we go through the same things, so he?s the one I?m closest to.?
With both backs healthy this season, FSU hopes to have a potent rushing attack again. And the two talented runners hope to spend more time together in the backfield than standing on the sidelines.
Regardless of where they?re standing, however, the two have formed a bond for life.
?I can talk to him [about] anything,? Freeman said. ?Our relationship right now is phenomenal. He?s like someone I know I?ll talk to after college, and he always will be my friend.?
