SANTA ANA, Orange County, California ? Vietnam veteran Jose Javier Diaz was the victim of a double hit and run crash Saturday in the 400 block of South Broadway Street as he attempted to cross just south of Chestnut Avenue, according to police reports.
It was nighttime, about 8:40 p.m., Mr. Diaz, 55, was crossing the street in the in an eastbound direction outside of marked crosswalks when he was first struck by a white Chevy truck traveling northbound. The impact of the car threw Mr. Diaz into the southbound lanes. Just after the driver of that vehicle fled the scene, sadly Mr. Diaz was struck by the driver of a green Ford Mustang with a black convertible top. The driver of that vehicle also fled the scene of what police now describe as a crime.
Witnesses told police that prior to the crash Mr. Diaz appeared to be wandering in the street and behaving erratically, according to Orange County news reports.

Hit and run accidents involving a death involve the same fines and stiffer sentences of up to four years in jail.
